The Island Packet reported that on January 5, 2006 the Hilton Head Island Middle School received threats, which eventually totalled eight in number, and resulted in a lockdown that ended Monday January 23, 2006. "Town Of Hilton Head . Com" has not been able to determine the specifics of the threats as of this time, however, it has been published in local papers that the Beaufort County Police are still actively investigating the matter. The lockdown included Hilton Head High, even though the High School is on a separate campus. That campus is located in the same complex with the Middle School. Update as of February 15, 2006: Michael Cochrane of 85 Lawton Road in Sea Pines is arrested and charged. Apparently he was attempting to foster a stronger family relationship with a younger brother.

The Associated Press reported that a six-member academic standards subcommittee will be hearing from a group of science experts today and then vote on whether to recommend approval of four sentences in new biology standards that deal with teaching evolution. The subcommittee's recommendation then will go on to the full panel for a vote. Senator Mike Fair, R-Greenville is involved, and was quoted: "I don't want to hide from what I think and believe. I've been interested in the past in doing intelligent design as a curriculum item...." A USC biology professor, Mr. Jerry Hilbish was quoted: "there are no legitimate, scientifically sound criticisms of evolution."

State Department Of Education reported that as required by the State's 1998 Education Accountability Act, and the basis for 20% of a student's final grade, that district (Beaufort) students scored as follows: 10% A, 15% B, 23.9% C, 22.1% D, 29% F on Algebra. Average Scores for English was 74.7%, Biology 68.6%, Physical Science 63.6%. Hilton Head High's Scores were below the state average in English & Algebra.
